Spicarium, Protected cultural heritage monument in Vegesack, Germany
The Spicarium is a protected warehouse building in Vegesack with a modern glass staircase addition on its eastern side. The structure combines historic industrial architecture with contemporary design across multiple accessible levels.
The building was constructed in 1814 as a warehouse for the Lange shipyard, witnessing the construction of more than 300 vessels during the early 1800s. The shipyard shaped Vegesack's development as an important shipbuilding center.
The building served as a gathering space for people interested in ships and port work. It reflects the importance Bremen held as a harbor city connected to global trade and maritime traditions.
The building features an elevator and barrier-free entrances for all visitors. Wheelchair users and people with mobility limitations can reach all areas without difficulty.
The name derives from Latin terms for storage administration, showing its transformation from a simple warehouse into a place for sharing knowledge. This naming choice bridges the building's industrial past with its modern purpose.
