Staatsgalerie Aschaffenburg

Staatsgalerie Aschaffenburg, Art museum in Schloss Johannisburg, Germany.

The Staatsgalerie Aschaffenburg is an art museum located within Schloss Johannisburg and houses around 368 paintings created across several centuries by different artists. This collection ranks as one of the largest holdings of the Bavarian State Painting Collections outside Munich.

The collection was founded in 1793 by Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal, the Elector of Mainz who lived at Schloss Johannisburg. After he moved away in 1802, the collection continued to grow and develop over time.

The collection displays works by German and Dutch artists that reflect how art traditions connected different regions and periods. Visitors can see how styles from south and north influenced each other through the pieces on display.

The museum is housed within Schloss Johannisburg and can be visited during regular opening hours. Keep in mind that the gallery is part of the castle complex, so you can explore the entire grounds while you are there.

The collection includes a notable Passion series by Aert de Gelder, the last student of Rembrandt, showing artistic connections to Dutch masters. These rare works offer insight into how Dutch painting traditions continued and evolved from earlier periods into the 17th century.
