Sontheimer Höhle, Show cave in Heroldstatt, Germany
Sontheimer Höhle is a limestone cave in the Swabian Alb with multiple interconnected chambers and passages extending through the rock formations. The system was carved by water over thousands of years and contains various sized rooms that visitors can walk through during tours.
Early mapping in the 1750s made this one of the first documented caves in the Swabian Alb region, preceding modern cave research by decades. Archaeological work in the 1970s uncovered evidence of human presence spanning multiple ancient periods within its chambers.
Ancient Celtic and Alemannic communities used this site for burial rituals and ceremonies, leaving traces that visitors can observe during tours. The cave held spiritual or practical significance for these early inhabitants who left their mark on the walls and chambers.
The cave is open for guided tours from late spring through autumn, but closes during colder months to protect its bat population. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a light jacket since the temperature inside remains cool throughout the year regardless of season.
Hundreds of bats from numerous species use this cave as their winter shelter, relying on the stable temperature and humidity inside for survival during cold months. This natural refuge makes it one of the most important hibernation sites in the broader region.
