Kloster Urspring, Benedictine monastery in Schelklingen, Germany
Kloster Urspring is a Benedictine monastery near Schelklingen comprising several historic buildings and St. Ulrich Church set beside a natural spring. The complex sits in a countryside setting with structures that reflect different periods of its past.
The monastery was founded in 1127 when three brothers donated their land to St. Georgen Abbey. For more than 600 years a Benedictine nun community lived there until it dissolved in 1806.
The complex houses 16th-century altarpieces and stained glass windows that show how religious art was created and valued during medieval times. These works still shape the appearance of the spaces today and reflect the beliefs of the people who made them.
The monastery grounds are part of the UrspringRunde, a walking route of about 4 kilometers that connects Schelklingen town with the surrounding landscape. The path works well for a casual stroll and gives you a chance to see both the buildings and the natural setting.
After the monastery closed, the site became Urspringschule, a modern school with a notably strong basketball program. This unexpected turn shows how historic places can gain new purpose and develop in surprising directions.
