Hohle Fels, Archaeological cave site in Schelklingen, Germany

Hohle Fels is a cave in the Swabian Jura with multiple chambers and passages running through limestone formations. The system extends across different levels and shows the typical structure of a solution cave with natural passages.

The cave was first examined in 1870 and revealed human settlements from the Stone Age. Further excavations showed that people sought shelter here over long periods and left their traces behind.

The cave displays traces of early artistic expression created here thousands of years ago. Visitors can see how people in this era expressed their creativity through objects made from bone and stone.

Access is via a walking path leading to the cave entrance, which is manageable for most visitors. Inside, visitors should expect cool temperatures and damp conditions and dress accordingly.

Bone flutes were found in the cave, among the oldest known musical instruments. A small ivory female figure discovered here also ranks among humanity's earliest artworks.
