Schmiechener See, Protected wetland in Schelklingen, Germany
Schmiechener See is a shallow lake formed within an ancient Danube River meander, covering around 50 hectares at high water levels. The protected area includes reed beds, open water surfaces, and surrounding meadows that create a varied landscape.
The lake was formed naturally when the Danube River changed its course over earlier periods. The area was officially protected in 1973 after scientists recognized its critical role as a habitat for water birds and other wildlife.
The local name 'd'r Sai' comes from the regional dialect and shows how deeply connected the surrounding communities feel to this water. Visitors often hear residents use this term, which reflects the everyday relationship people have with the place.
A trail of about 5 kilometers circles the lake and is partly paved or surfaced with mineral materials for cyclists and wheelchair users. Sturdy shoes are helpful since path conditions can vary, especially after rain or during wetter seasons.
Water buffalo graze in the protected area to naturally control vegetation growth and prevent excessive plant coverage. These animals are not native but their presence shows an unusual approach to managing the landscape.
