Sophienhöhle

Sophienhöhle is a natural cave system in Ahorntal that stretches 900 meters long with a width of 25 meters beneath the valley. The passages contain multiple chambers decorated with hanging and standing limestone formations that visitors explore along designated paths.

The cave served as a shelter for humans and animals in prehistoric times, evidenced by tools and bones discovered within. Scientific exploration of the site began in the 1800s and revealed important details about early habitation in the region.

The cave chambers serve as concert venues where musicians perform various genres, utilizing the natural acoustics created by the limestone formations.

Access to the cave is on foot via marked trails, and visitors should wear sturdy shoes since paths are sometimes steep and slippery. The temperature inside stays cool year-round, so bringing warmer clothing is wise even during summer months.

A large stalagmite formation inside is named the Millionaire and ranks among the most striking stone structures in the cave. Long sinter flags formed by dripping water over time hang from the ceilings, creating an almost fairytale-like scene.
