Stadtwerketurm, Industrial chimney in Duisburg, Germany
The Stadtwerketurm is an industrial chimney in Duisburg standing about 200 meters tall, built from four vertical tubes that form its core structure. Three tubes handled smoke exhaust from the heating power plant below, while the central tube housed an elevator that carried visitors upward.
Built between 1966 and 1967, it served as the main chimney for the city's heating power plant for decades. The facility shut down in 2012, after which the structure gradually transformed into a new symbol for the city.
After its power plant closed, the tower became a landmark of the city and displays the company's green color through nighttime lighting. The green illumination is now part of Duisburg's identity and is recognized by locals and visitors alike.
An elevator in the center allows visitors to ascend, though access may depend on current operational conditions. The best viewing experience occurs at nightfall, when the green lighting illuminates the structure and makes it visible from ground level.
The green illumination was installed in 1999 using about 50 spotlights, making the tower glow at night and keeping it visible from many parts of the city. This lighting system is one reason why the chimney is recognized faster by citizens today than its original purpose.
