Talsperre Burgkhammer, reservoir in Germany
Talsperre Burgkhammer is a reservoir near Schleiz, in the Saale-Orla district of Thuringia, formed by a concrete dam that closes off a valley above the Saale river. The water stretches between wooded slopes, and the dam structure itself is clearly visible from a viewing point nearby.
The reservoir was completed in the early 1930s as part of a series of dams built along the upper Saale valley to generate power and manage flooding. Burgkhammer was among the first of these in the region and set the pattern for further reservoirs built upstream in the following decades.
The reservoir sits in a region known for motorcycle racing, but the water draws a different kind of visitor: walkers, anglers, and families looking for a few hours outdoors. The forest paths around the basin are used throughout the year, even in winter when the area is at its quietest.
A marked path runs along the edge of the reservoir and is easy to walk for all ages. For a good view of the dam and the full basin, the viewpoint near Schloss Burgk on the hill above is worth the short climb.
Schloss Burgk, which sits on a rocky spur directly above the water, existed long before the reservoir and originally looked down over a narrow stretch of the Saale river. The construction of the dam turned that river section into a wide basin, changing how the castle relates to the landscape around it.
