Hammet und Hasan, Islamic tomb in Mitte, Germany

Two adjacent stone graves with Islamic inscriptions stand in the Neustädter cemetery, featuring traditional Muslim burial markers oriented towards Mecca.

The graves, dating from 1691, belong to Hammet and Hasan, Turkish prisoners captured by Hanoverian troops during the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683.

These tombs represent the earliest preserved Islamic burial sites in Germany, marking the presence of the first Turkish inhabitants in Hanover.

The graves are located at coordinates 52.3781° N and 9.7262° E, with a commemorative plaque added in 2006 providing information in German and Turkish.

A 150-meter bicycle path named Hammet-und-Hasan-Weg was established in 2023 near the cemetery to honor these historical figures.
