J. C. König & Ebhardt, Architectural heritage monument and factory in Nord, Germany
J. C. König & Ebhardt is a factory complex with industrial architecture from the 19th century that reflects the construction principles of that era's manufacturing. The buildings feature characteristic elements of production facilities from this period, including brick walls and large windows to bring natural light into the workshops.
The company was founded in 1845 and initially produced labels and forms for chicory and mustard products. It later evolved into the world's first factory dedicated to manufacturing business books and set standards in the printing industry.
The factory employed graphic artists who created securities, art prints, and color postcards that were distributed throughout Germany and beyond. Their work reflects the craft and skill that defined production at this site.
The site is located in Nord and now serves educational purposes as part of the University of Hannover. Check ahead before visiting, as access to certain areas may be restricted depending on academic activities.
In 1866, the factory introduced two-color printing presses to Germany, followed by wire-stitching machines in 1878 and rapid covering machines in 1879. These technical innovations made the site a pioneer in modern printing technology.
