Hammet und Hasan, Islamic tomb in Mitte, Germany
Hammet and Hasan are two adjacent stone graves with Islamic inscriptions located in the Neustädter cemetery. The grave markers are oriented toward Mecca and display traditional Muslim burial characteristics.
These graves date from 1691 and belong to two Turkish prisoners of war captured during the siege of Vienna in 1683. They represent the oldest preserved Islamic burials in Germany.
These graves mark the arrival of early Muslim residents in the city during the Ottoman era. They show how the community's connection to different cultures goes back centuries.
The cemetery is freely accessible and the graves are located in a well-maintained area with clear signage. An informational plaque from 2006 with text in German and Turkish helps visitors understand the history.
A bicycle path called Hammet-und-Hasan-Weg was built in 2023 near the cemetery to honor these two historical figures. The path connects the story of these early arrivals with the city's modern everyday life.
