Teufelsmühle Oybin, ehemalige Sägemühle im Goldbachtal in Oybin
The Teufelsmühle Oybin is a historic watermill and sawmill located in the Goldbach valley near the town of Oybin. The building sits beside a small narrow-gauge railway station and operates today as a hotel and restaurant for visitors.
The building is believed to be Oybin's oldest mill and existed during the time of the Cölestine monks around 1500. Over the centuries it changed functions from sawmill to grain mill, burned down in 1848, was rebuilt, and later served as a holiday home for workers.
The mill's name comes from an old legend involving a monk and supernatural events at this location. The site serves as a familiar landmark for locals and visitors alike, standing on a rocky hillside by the stream.
The site is easily accessible from the nearby train station and has parking available for visitors arriving by car. The historic building is open for access, and you should allow time to see the old stone cross from 1670 and explore the marked walking paths in the surrounding area.
Near the mill building stands a large stone cross from 1670 on a small platform, which according to local legend marks the memory of a hermitage and a deceased hermit. Visitors often overlook this quiet monument that has stood witness to countless travelers heading toward Zittau.
