The protected area spans 302 hectares of wetlands, meadows, and mixed forests across undulating dunes in Lower Saxony.
The German government established Viehmoor as a protected nature reserve on August 2, 1979, to preserve its ecological features and diverse wildlife.
The Nature Conservation Union chapter leads environmental education programs and coordinates volunteer activities to maintain the reserve's natural habitats.
Visitors can access designated hiking trails and parking areas, with the NABU Species Protection Center in Leiferde offering guided tours of the preserve.
The reserve contains 36 hectares of former fish ponds with wetland zones and extensive meadows rich in peat, supporting numerous bird species.
