Venusgrotte, Artificial cave in Linderhof, Germany

The Venus Grotto contains a large underground lake with wave-making machinery and electric lighting systems that create color variations across limestone walls.

Construction of this grotto occurred from 1876 to 1877 under King Ludwig II of Bavaria's supervision, representing the first act of Wagner's Tannhäuser opera.

The grotto combines theatrical elements with architecture, featuring painted backdrops, artificial stalactites, and a mechanism that generates staged performances on its lake.

Visitors reach the grotto through a 100-meter path leading from Linderhof Palace, with guided tours available from April through October.

The grotto includes a gilded shell-shaped boat floating on an artificial lake where King Ludwig II listened to Wagner's compositions in solitude.
