Wagengrab von Bell, Iron Age chariot burial site in Bell, Germany.
The Wagengrab von Bell is an Iron Age burial site containing a four-wheeled chariot and bronze vessels arranged within a wooden chamber. The site is located near the Hunsrück region and was carefully excavated for study.
The burial dates to around 500 BCE during the Late Hallstatt period and came to light in 1938 during construction of the Hunsrück Highway. The discovery added important knowledge about Iron Age burial practices in the region.
The burial reflects the importance of the deceased through valuable items like an iron spear and bronze drinking vessels, indicating a local leader. These objects reveal the social divisions that existed in that society at the time.
The artifacts and reconstructed burial chamber are displayed at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn where visitors can view them. The museum setting allows for close examination of the objects with detailed explanations available.
The grave was part of the Fuchshohl cemetery containing 41 burials from three or fewer Iron Age farmsteads. This cluster provides insights into settlement patterns and how multiple farm communities coexisted.
