Castle Kastellaun

Castle Kastellaun is a hilltop ruin in the Rhein-Hunsrück region with surviving wall sections, a tower, and distinct areas that reveal its original layout. The site also includes a documentation center that records the structure's architectural development across centuries.

The fortress was built between 1200 and 1226 by the Counts of Sponheim as a strategic stronghold for the region. It was destroyed by French forces in 1689, and this destruction remains visible in the partly collapsed structures today.

The castle served as a symbol of local power for centuries and remains central to how people see this place today. Visitors can observe how these ruins shaped life in the region and why they matter to the community.

The site is easy to explore on foot and offers good viewpoints across the surrounding landscape, though some areas are uneven due to the ruined state. Wear sturdy shoes as the paths are not level everywhere.
