Kyrillpfad Kastellaun, Forest hiking trail in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany
Kyrillpfad Kastellaun is a circular hiking route near the town of Kastellaun that winds through forest and over gentle slopes. The path uses different types of surfaces: some sections are paved while others follow natural forest trails.
The path was created after Storm Kyrill in January 2007, which damaged and toppled large sections of forest. The project demonstrates how nature can recover on its own from such disasters.
The trail takes its name from Storm Kyrill, a local event that shaped the area and remains visible in how the landscape has recovered. Visitors can observe how the forest has been allowed to regenerate naturally without heavy human intervention.
The route starts at Kastellaun Marketplace and is clearly marked with signs throughout, making it easy to follow. There are several rest areas along the way where you can stop to rest or enjoy the surroundings.
In several places along the path, you can clearly see different forest stages side by side: where trees have fallen and are growing back, and where the forest stands undisturbed. These contrasts help visitors understand how long natural recovery takes.
