Kaufhaus Jandorf, Brunnenstraße, Department store in Berlin-Mitte, Germany.
Kaufhaus Jandorf at Brunnenstraße is a five-story department store in Berlin-Mitte with steel skeleton construction and flexible floor plans. The retail space spans approximately 10,000 square meters and uses structural openness to create adaptable interior layouts.
Adolf Jandorf opened this department store in 1904 as a modern retail building, which later passed to the Hermann Tietz Company in 1927. The structure survived World War II with minimal damage and remained one of the few major commercial palaces in the region.
During East German rule from 1952 onward, the building functioned as a fashion institute that shaped how people thought about style and design across the region. This role as a hub for clothing culture left a lasting mark on how locals connected with the structure.
The building sits across from Volkspark am Weinbergsweg and is easily accessible from several public transit stops. It underwent major renovation from 2017 to 2019 and now houses the Berlin headquarters for Daimler and BMW.
The building features distinctive Art Nouveau elements and a central light court that was redesigned during the Hermann Tietz period. These changes to the light court remain visible today, showing how different occupants adapted the space over time.
