Weilberg, Mountain summit in Königswinter, Germany
Weilberg is a summit in the Siebengebirge range near Königswinter that rises about 240 meters. The mountain displays prominent dark basalt layers, with an abandoned quarry visible on one side where extraction work once took place.
The mountain served as a source for basalt stone from the late 1800s onward, with extraction continuing until 1940. Material was transported across the region using a specialized railway system built to serve the mining operations.
The Siebengebirge area, including Weilberg, received the European Diploma for Protected Areas in 1971, marking its importance for nature conservation.
Several hiking routes lead to the summit, and sturdy footwear is recommended. Visitors should stay alert near the former quarry areas due to steep drops and uneven ground.
The rock formation at Weilberg originated about 30 million years ago through volcanic activity, with magma intruding into the original stone composition. This geological history remains visible in the exposed layers of the former quarry.
