Wallfahrtskirche Mariä Himmelfahrt

Wallfahrtskirche Mariä Himmelfahrt is a single-nave church with a curved ceiling decorated in stucco and paint, creating an open and light-filled interior space. A distinctive tower topped by an onion-shaped dome marks the skyline and is visible from throughout the town.

The building was constructed between 1750 and 1765, replacing an earlier chapel established by monks from nearby Niederaltaich Monastery over a century before. This new construction reflects the classical architectural style that was contemporary to that era.

The church serves as a pilgrimage destination where visitors come to venerate a wooden Mary figure that has been central to local devotion for centuries. This religious practice has shaped the identity of the town and continues to draw people seeking spiritual connection.

The church is located in the town center and is easily accessible on foot with barrier-free entry at ground level. Regular services offer visitors a chance to experience the interior during active worship times.

The pulpit was handcrafted in 1758 by artist Johann Paulus Hager and features carved biblical scenes, including the prophet Jonah in the belly of a fish. This detailed carving represents a rare example of 18th-century craftsmanship and artistry.
