Villa Schöningen, Historic villa in Nördliche Vorstädte, Potsdam, Germany
Villa Schöningen is a neoclassical residence at Berliner Straße 86 with Italian architectural influences overlooking surrounding gardens. The building combines classical forms with spacious rooms now used for art exhibitions.
Ludwig Persius designed the residence in 1843 for chamberlain Kurd von Schöning under instruction from Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. The property survived Germany's turbulent history and was later transformed into an art venue.
The residence now hosts contemporary art exhibitions featuring historical masters alongside modern artists in rotating displays. Visitors experience the rooms as a living space for artistic experimentation and dialogue.
The residence is open Friday through Sunday from 12:00 to 18:00, with discounted admission for students and free entry for children under 18. Visiting on a weekday offers a quieter experience for exploring the exhibitions.
The building stood near Glienicke Bridge during the Cold War, where captured agents were exchanged between Soviet and Western forces. This proximity to a place of secret diplomacy makes the villa a witness to divided history.
