The Haltern waterworks facility stretches across 200 hectares between the Lippe River and Haltern Reservoir, featuring 26 infiltration basins with 335,000 square meters of filter surface.
The establishment of Haltern waterworks in 1908 led to the creation of both the Haltern reservoir and the Stever dam in 1930, transforming regional water management.
The waterworks forms part of the Industrial Heritage Trail, offering guided tours that demonstrate the evolution of water management technologies in the Ruhr region.
The facility supplies drinking water to one million residents across northern Ruhr, western Münsterland, and Duisburg, processing approximately 350,000 cubic meters daily.
The natural Haltern sands serve as underground water storage and filtration system, where water stays for six weeks during slow sand filtration processes.
