Wenigenburg, Medieval castle ruin in Amöneburg, Germany.
Wenigenburg is a castle ruin located on the southwestern slope of Amöneburg mountain at approximately 317 meters elevation. The site retains foundation walls, the base of a square keep, and two preserved cellars.
The castle appears in records first in 1248 as 'pervus castrum' and functioned as an outer fortress protecting Amöneburg. Its importance declined after the Landgraves took control in 1280.
The castle site displays medieval defensive design through its moat and ring wall layout. Visitors can observe how fortifications of this era were constructed to protect settlements.
The ruins are accessible year-round and can be viewed freely from outside. The path uphill is steep, but the view of the surrounding landscape makes the climb worthwhile.
Several noble families owned the castle over time, including the Schenk von Schweinsberg and later the Reichsgrafen von Görtz. These ownership changes reveal the region's complicated power structure.
