Shipyard Island, Bremen, River island in Gröpelingen, Germany
Shipyard Island is a river island situated in the Weser with a network of walking paths. Approximately 160 poplar trees line the island, creating a natural space within the harbor landscape.
The island emerged from excavation works at the shipyard harbor, transforming a former peninsula into an isolated landmass. It lies near a former U-boat facility that shaped the area's industrial past.
Local residents regularly visit for fishing and gathering seasonal berries along the shore. The walking paths serve as a quiet place where people enjoy their free time away from the city bustle.
A 70-meter pedestrian bridge connects the island to the mainland, offering direct access from the adjacent shopping center area. The island is easy to reach on foot and the paths are straightforward to navigate.
Environmental assessments identified some of the poplar trees as needing removal to protect the space. This effort demonstrates how nature management and urban care work together on the island.
