Außenalster, Artificial lake in central Hamburg, Germany
The Außenalster is an artificial lake covering about 164 hectares with an average depth of 2.5 meters in central Hamburg. It is bordered by parks, green spaces, and residential neighborhoods, forming a connected water system with the smaller Binnenalster.
A dam built in 1250 transformed the Alster river into two connected water bodies, creating this lake. This ancient water system became central to Hamburg's development as a trading hub and water-oriented city.
The neighborhoods around this lake feature grand mansions and mature trees that define areas like Winterhude and Rotherbaum. Locals and visitors gather along the shores for walking, jogging, and water sports throughout the year.
You can rent boats, canoes, and kayaks from several locations around the lake to explore the water and shoreline. Wear appropriate footwear since the pathways vary and can become slippery in wet weather.
A walking path of about 7.6 kilometers circles the entire shoreline, offering constant views of Hamburg's architecture and waterfront life. Many joggers and walkers use this route daily, especially during early morning and evening hours.
