Camp Grohn, Former military barracks in Bremen, Germany
Camp Grohn is a former military base in Bremen comprising multiple buildings spread across a large area near the northern part of the city. The site sits along the Lesum River and now houses Constructor University while retaining many of its original military structures.
The installation was built in 1936 as an anti-aircraft barracks for the German Luftwaffe and served its defense regiment. After 1945 the United States operated it as a military base until 1954 when its use changed.
The site served as a crucial processing center for displaced persons and migrants after World War II who wanted to start over elsewhere. Thousands passed through here on their way to new lives in the United States.
The grounds today form a campus with structures from different periods that you can walk through and explore. Plan to spend time wandering the different sections since the area covers considerable ground.
The camp streets bear the names of 12 soldiers from the 311th Regiment, including Medal of Honor recipient S/Sgt Jonah Edward Kelley. This naming choice honors the American servicemen connected to the place.
