Kontorhaus am Markt, Protected heritage building in Mitte, Germany.
Kontorhaus am Markt is a protected heritage office building in Mitte with an elaborate neo-Renaissance facade featuring Gothic arches, columns, and allegorical sculptures at its three-section portal entrance. The structure anchors the streetscape at Langenstrasse through its distinctive architectural details and serves as a focal point in the historic city center.
The structure was built between 1910 and 1912 for the Disconto Company bank, replacing several smaller gabled houses that previously occupied the site. Its construction supported the expansion of the local chamber of commerce and has shaped the character of the square ever since.
The building will house an interactive exhibition space dedicated to the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, inviting visitors to explore the story of the Town Musicians. This exhibition spans two expansive floors and connects the region's heritage with literary narratives in a way people can experience directly.
The building is visible and easy to locate since it sits at a central plaza in the city center. The planned renovation of the upper levels will create new exhibition areas and office spaces, meaning the interior experience will change over time as work progresses.
The building incorporates Muschelkalk freestone, a distinctive material, and displays a double-arched pediment on its market-facing side with ornamental elements above the arcade openings. These fine details often escape visitors' notice even though they define the exterior character of the structure.
