Schloss Batzenhofen, Heritage château in Gersthofen, Germany
Schloss Batzenhofen is a two-story residential building with a distinctive hook-shaped footprint and hip roof overlooking the Schmutter river. The structure displays architectural features typical of 18th-century Bavarian estate houses and now serves as residential apartments.
The building was constructed around 1750 as a summer residence for the Canoness Abbey of St. Stephen in Augsburg, which had controlled the village since 1530. Following secularization in 1803, it lost its original purpose and underwent several functional transitions.
The château takes its name from the village of Batzenhofen, which was long controlled by the abbey that commissioned it. Visitors can still observe how the building's design reflects its origins as a residence for abbey officials.
The building is located at Martinstraße 9 in Gersthofen-Batzenhofen and can be viewed from the street. As a private residential building, interior access is not generally available, but the exterior clearly shows the architectural form and roof structure.
The interior ceiling and roof timber framework date back to 1712, predating the main structure by about 40 years. This suggests earlier buildings once occupied the site before the current form was completed.
