Located on the western bank of the Lech River, Gersthofen comprises five districts: Batzenhofen, Edenbergen, Gersthofen proper, Hirblingen, and Rettenbergen.
Archaeological evidence from a grave discovered in 1932 confirms the presence of Alemanni settlements in Gersthofen dating back to 260 AD.
The town received its name from a local leader called Gerfred, with the first written record appearing in 969 in Bishop Ulrich's papal document.
The municipality maintains direct access to Augsburg through its position 7 kilometers north of the city, with excellent transport connections via road networks.
Swiss physicist Auguste Piccard selected Gersthofen as a launch site for his groundbreaking stratospheric balloon research flights in 1931.
