Schloss Marbach, Medieval hillside castle in Öhningen, Germany
Schloss Marbach is a hillside castle near Öhningen, set on a south-facing slope just above Lake Constance. The complex is made up of several stone buildings arranged around a courtyard, with windows and terraces that look out over the water.
Schloss Marbach first appeared in written records in 1291, at a time when fortified buildings were going up across the German-Swiss border region. Over the following centuries it changed hands several times and was rebuilt and extended along the way.
Schloss Marbach is used today for weddings, meetings, and private events, so visitors often find the old stone rooms set up for gatherings rather than left as empty halls. The mix of old walls and current use gives the place a lived-in feeling that many historic buildings lack.
The castle is easy to reach by car and has parking on site, while those arriving on foot should allow extra time for the uphill path from the village. Comfortable walking shoes are helpful as parts of the grounds are on a slope.
The castle sits so close to the Swiss border that from its terraces you can look across Lake Constance and see both the German and Swiss shores at once. This borderline position meant the castle was caught up in disputes between neighboring territories for much of its early history.
