Zisterzienserinnenkloster Feldbach, Cistercian monastery in Steckborn, Switzerland
Zisterzienserinnenkloster Feldbach is a monastery complex situated on a peninsula along Lake Constance near Steckborn. The site now operates as a hotel and includes historic buildings alongside a rose garden cultivating numerous varieties.
Nobleman Kuno von Feldbach founded the monastery in 1252 as a center for Cistercian nuns. After secularization in 1848, the site underwent transformation, with a fire in 1895 destroying much of the buildings.
The buildings reflect Cistercian architectural principles emphasizing simplicity and function. Visitors can observe this understated style in the layout and spaces throughout the complex.
The site operates as a hotel with restaurant and accommodation facilities open to visitors. Access to the grounds and gardens is possible during visiting hours, with waterfront paths offering views of the lake.
One original monastic building survived the major fire of 1895 when nearly all other structures were destroyed. This remaining structure now forms a key part of the hotel property, bridging the medieval past with present-day use.
