Museum Haus Dix

Museum Haus Dix is the former home of painter Otto Dix in Gaienhofen, filled with original furnishings and artworks from different periods of his career. The rooms contain period furniture and personal items that create a genuine picture of how this artist lived and worked.

Otto Dix arrived at this house in 1936 after losing his position at the Dresden Academy, and remained here until his death in 1969. The house became the setting where he continued to develop his artistic practice during the most difficult years of the 20th century.

The rooms show how an artist and his family lived day to day, with furnishings and personal objects still arranged as they left them. The spaces reflect the creative environment where this painter spent his most productive years.

The best time to visit is between March and October when the house is regularly open to the public. Coming earlier in the day allows you to see the rooms in good light and spend time exploring the collections at a relaxed pace.

The basement contains colorful murals that Otto Dix painted himself, depicting carnival scenes and festive themes. These vibrant decorations were hidden for decades until workers found them during a renovation.
