WissenschaftsForum Berlin, Scientific institution network at Gendarmenmarkt, Berlin, Germany
WissenschaftsForum Berlin is a building at Markgrafenstraße 37 that provides office spaces for scientific organizations and research institutions. The facility houses offices for organizations including the German Research Foundation and the German Aerospace Center.
In 1991, Berlin approached the Volkswagen Foundation with an idea to establish a scientific forum near the future government district. This construction project represented a significant investment in research infrastructure for the reunified city.
The forum brings together researchers, policymakers, and business leaders in a building located at the historic Gendarmenmarkt. This central Berlin location makes it a natural meeting point for dialogue between different sectors of society.
The building has shops and cafes on the ground floor where visitors can enter and get a sense of the space. The scientific offices are located in the upper floors and are generally not open to the public.
The building was designed as part of Berlin's government district planning and uses an unusual mix of public commercial spaces below and private office areas above. This design allows visitors to be in a place where important scientific networks form daily without needing to access the restricted upper levels.
