Schloss Altenburg, Medieval castle in Feldkirchen-Westerham, Germany
Schloss Altenburg is a medieval castle in Feldkirchen-Westerham featuring multiple floors with distinct architectural elements spanning different periods. The complex includes towers, defensive walls, and residential quarters built across various phases of construction.
The castle was founded in the 12th century under Emperor Frederick Barbarossa as part of a network of imperial fortifications in Bavaria. It later underwent several reconstructions and served different rulers as both a residence and defensive stronghold.
The castle houses historical weapons from a former ducal armory and East Asian porcelain collected across different periods. These pieces reveal the tastes and distant connections of those who once lived here.
The site is accessible mainly from April to October, with guided tours offered in German and English. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as the paths are uneven and tower staircases are steep in places.
Inside stands the Hausmannsturm, a 12th-century defensive tower constructed without internal floors. This design allowed medieval artillery to be moved and positioned more easily throughout the structure.
