Wasserschloss Köfering, Medieval water castle in Köfering, Bavaria
Wasserschloss Köfering is a three-winged manor house with mansard roofs in the Regensburg district of Bavaria, still surrounded by a water moat. The ground floor opens onto arcade galleries and covered walkways, and the main entrance leads through an ornate stone portal.
A fortified residence at this site is recorded from the 12th century, when the Köfering family was first documented in the area. The building was rebuilt and altered several times over the centuries, and these different phases are still readable in the stonework today.
The chapel inside the grounds shows building elements from several centuries placed side by side, which is easy to notice during a visit. Looking closely, you can see how different building phases shaped the interior over time.
The only way to reach the entrance portal is by crossing a stone arched bridge over the water moat. The ground around the moat can be wet and soft, so solid footwear makes the visit more comfortable.
A stable building from the 19th century still stands on the grounds, showing how the property developed into a country estate over time. Garden walls built around 1700 frame a small park with a pavilion that has survived to the present day.
