Wasserschloss Köfering

Wasserschloss Köfering is a medieval water castle with three wings and mansard roofs, where the ground floor features arcade galleries and covered walkways. Entry passes through an ornate portal and requires crossing the water moat that still surrounds the structure.

A water fortress first appeared at this location in the 12th century, with the Köfering family being documented during that same period. The castle underwent several rebuildings and renovations whose traces remain visible in its various architectural layers.

The chapel displays architectural elements from different periods, creating a visible record of the place's changing history over time. You can see how each era left its mark on the interior spaces.

The castle is only accessible via a three-arched stone bridge crossing the water moat, which serves as the traditional approach. The surrounding grounds are wet and muddy in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended for exploring the area.

The grounds still contain a 19th-century stable building and garden walls built between 1700 and 1720 that frame a small park with a pavilion. These structures reveal how the property evolved as a country estate beyond just a fortress.
