Basteistraße 18, Heritage villa in Rüngsdorf, Germany

Basteistraße 18, also known as Villa Deichmann, is a two-storey country-house-style villa with decorative half-timbering, built 1900–1902 to a design by court architect Ernst von Ihne for Cologne banker Otto Deichmann. It stands in Rüngsdorf above the Rhine bank at the end of a cul-de-sac off Basteistraße, its layout oriented toward the Rhine panorama. The villa, the adjoining gardener's house and the former Deichmann remise are listed monuments.

Otto Deichmann, a Cologne banker and partner in Deichmann & Compagnie, commissioned the villa as a summer house. Court architect Ernst von Ihne designed it, and construction ran from 1900 to 1902, after a retaining wall was begun in August 1899. A 1944 bomb hit destroyed part of the building; the damaged section was rebuilt in 1984/85.

The villa was built as a summer house for Cologne banker Otto Deichmann, a partner in the bank Deichmann & Compagnie, and his family still owns and partly occupies it. Its position above the Rhine bank at the end of a cul-de-sac, with a gate, gardener's house and coach house, shows how a wealthy household arranged its grounds.

The villa stands at the end of a cul-de-sac branching off Basteistraße, above the Rhine bank at Von-Sandt-Ufer in Rüngsdorf. It is a private residence still occupied by the Deichmann family, so the house and its park are viewed from the street; the gate, remise and gardener's house are also under monument protection.

The Deichmann family still owns the estate and lives in part of the villa. The tea house by the riverside wall, like the remise, is a copy of the main house and has been fully restored with the heritage authorities.
