Christoph Hansa, Air ambulance helicopter base at BG Hospital in Hamburg, Germany
Christoph Hansa is an air rescue station based at BG Hospital Hamburg that operates a helicopter for medical emergencies across the region. The flying team includes a pilot, emergency physician, and paramedic who respond together to rescue calls.
The station was established in February 1990 by ADAC Luftrettung at BG Hospital Hamburg as Germany's first dedicated air rescue service for patient transfers. This marked a turning point in how quickly medical emergencies could be reached by helicopter.
The helicopter's call sign Christoph Hansa references Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travelers, following German air rescue naming traditions.
The helicopter operates daily from sunrise to sunset and is dispatched through Hamburg Fire Department's central control. Visitors should be aware the station is active and the aircraft may take off at any moment.
Since February 2022, the station operates an Airbus H145 helicopter equipped with a rescue winch for recovery missions. The modern aircraft can reach speeds up to 220 kilometers per hour and perform demanding water rescues.
