Altes Schloss Beihingen, Medieval castle in Freiberg am Neckar, Germany.
Altes Schloss Beihingen is a castle in Freiberg am Neckar consisting of two distinct structures: a three-story stone building on the north side and a late Gothic half-timbered building on the south side. A surrounding wall encloses the entire complex and defines its overall appearance.
The original fortress dates to the 13th century, with the substantial stone house built around 1480 as a residential structure. The fortification underwent significant redesign in the 15th century and was later adapted multiple times.
The castle served as a residence for various noble families across centuries and continues to shape the town's character. Walking through its spaces, visitors can sense the layered history of those who once called it home.
The complex now houses the city archive, a public library, and eleven apartments that visitors can access. Following a 1969 renovation, the interior spaces are well-maintained and open for exploration by the public.
A Renaissance-era defensive tower within the complex is remarkably well preserved and displays regional medieval defense techniques. Its thick walls tell the story of a time when such structures provided genuine protection.
