Schloss Mauren, Cultural heritage castle in Ehningen, Germany
Schloss Mauren is a castle monument in Ehningen with a rectangular layout featuring remaining walls, a stable block, and a greenhouse integrated into the historical structure. The foundation and lower levels preserve the original building fabric, while modern residential structures built in 2005 rest on the protected historical base walls.
The site was originally built in 1399 and redesigned between 1615 and 1617 by architect Heinrich Schickhardt for the Schertlin von Burtenbach family. Bomb damage from 1943 severely affected the Renaissance structure, leaving only the cellar areas and lower walls intact.
The castle park from the 17th century displays traditional German garden design with terrace walls, stone stairs, and ornamental elements that still shape the grounds today. These features allow visitors to experience the historical landscape architecture and understand the site's former importance.
The site is privately owned, so visits are possible from the outside, but closer inspection requires caution and respect for private boundaries. The modern residential buildings on the grounds are clearly visible and help visitors understand where the historical foundations lie.
After severe bombing damage in 1943, only the cellar areas and lower walls of the Renaissance structure survived, revealing the destruction of war. The protected foundations were later reused as the base for modern residential buildings that now define the site.
