Schloss

Schloss Castell is a three-winged baroque palace perched on Schlossberg hill with symmetrical facades and manicured formal gardens. The building complex combines Franconian architectural tradition with baroque design principles on a prominent elevated site.

The present palace was built between 1686 and 1691 on the ruins of two earlier fortresses destroyed during the 1525 Peasants' War. The reconstruction under Peter Sommer marked the family's fresh start at this location after destruction.

The palace remains the residence of the prince of Castell-Castell and shapes the village's identity from its elevated position. Its symmetrical facades and formal layout reflect the enduring status of this noble family in the Franconia region.

The English landscape garden surrounding the palace provides walking paths through manicured grounds laid out in the early 1800s. The hilltop position offers views across the surrounding countryside and the village below.

The palace houses the headquarters of Fürstlich Castell'sche Bank, one of Germany's oldest private banks founded in 1774. This arrangement reveals how the noble family managed its finances and exercised economic power across generations.
