St. Maria auf dem Berg

St. Maria auf dem Berg features three aisles, a transept, and thick walls constructed of stone, following traditional Romanesque architectural principles.

Initially documented in 1200, the church served as part of a Cistercian convent until World War II bombings caused extensive damage to its structure.

The church contains preserved elements from different periods, including a Gothic crucifix head and a grave marker from its time as a Cistercian convent.

The church grounds, renovated during the 2004 Thuringian State Garden Show, include modern steel structures indicating the position of the former nave.

Three bells occupy the 1997 tower, with one dating to 1448 and another commemorating Nordhausen's millennium celebration.
