Kapellplatz, Memorial square and park in Darmstadt, Germany
Kapellplatz is a public square with park spaces in central Darmstadt featuring scattered gravestones, mosaic pathways, and trees distributed across the ground. The space is defined by a 7-meter granite cross and bronze sculptures that form the memorial composition.
The square was established in 1739 on the grounds of an earlier cemetery with a chapel from 1601 that served as the city's second burial ground until its demolition in 1868. Remains of a neo-Gothic church destroyed during a 1944 air raid are still visible in the southeast corner of the site.
The square takes its name from a chapel that once stood here, and today displays memorials honoring those who suffered under Nazi rule. Visitors find traces of this remembrance culture throughout, making the space a place of reflection and mourning.
The square is centrally located and easily reached on foot, with pharmacies, supermarkets, and bakeries within walking distance. Public transportation is also readily accessible and provides good connections to other parts of the city.
The square features multiple bronze sculptures by artist Thomas Duttenhoefer created specifically for this memorial site. These artworks receive less attention than the granite cross but are central to the visual and emotional composition of the space.
