Hinkelsturm, Medieval defense tower in Darmstadt, Germany.
The Hinkelsturm is a stone tower standing about 16 meters high with three floors linked by narrow spiral staircases inside. Today it houses a museum showcasing a model of how the medieval old town looked before it changed over the centuries.
The tower was built in the 14th century as part of Darmstadt's defensive walls to protect the city. It suffered damage during the Second World War and underwent major repairs in 1952.
Inside, a detailed scale model displays Darmstadt's medieval old town with its narrow streets and buildings as they once stood. Visitors can see how the city was organized and imagine daily life in those crowded quarters.
The tower requires climbing narrow stairs to reach the upper floors, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a workout. Arrive early as the small space inside can get crowded during visiting hours.
During renovations from 1994 to 1997, a seven-meter-high steel crown with a roof was added to the tower, completely changing how it looks from the outside. This unexpected addition shows how historic structures sometimes receive modern upgrades.
