Propeller Island City Lodge, hotel and art installation in Berlin, Germany
Propeller Island City Lodge is a hotel in Berlin-Wilmersdorf with about 30 individually themed rooms, each featuring its own artistic design. The rooms combine unusual shapes, materials, and decorations, from hanging beds to painted walls and surreal objects, creating spaces where function and art blend together.
The hotel was founded in 1997 when German artist Lars Storschen began renting out rooms in his home, creating themed spaces like the Symbol, Orange, Castle, and Mirrors rooms. The building expanded over subsequent years, with new floors added in 2001 and 2002, growing the collection of themed rooms.
The hotel's name references the artistic vision of creating spaces that spark imagination and movement. Visitors use these rooms to experience art in everyday life, reflecting Berlin's role as a hub for creative minds and experimental thinking.
The hotel is located on Albrecht-Achilles-Straße and is easily accessible by public transportation, situated in a residential area with nearby cafes and shops. It is recommended to book well in advance since the limited number of rooms fill quickly.
Some rooms, like Upside Down, have furniture fixed to the ceiling with beds hidden beneath the floor, completely reversing expectations of how a bedroom should function. The Wrap room is tube-shaped like a mine shaft with layered beds inside, while the Dwarf room stands only 4 feet 6 inches tall and is filled with plastic gnomes.
