Öjendorfer Park, Public park and heritage monument in Billstedt, Hamburg, Germany.
Öjendorfer Park is a green space with a large lake in eastern Hamburg situated between two motorways. The water body is surrounded by forest strips and wide open areas that create different environments within the park.
In the 1920s, the area was excavated to extract sand and gravel for raising surrounding land levels. The pit left behind was later converted into the water body that exists today within the park.
The park serves as a recreational retreat where locals walk, cycle, and spend time by the water. The varied zones from playgrounds to open green areas allow different activities to coexist in the same space.
The lake is open for swimming during summer months, with a northern section reserved for birds and wildlife. The pathways throughout the park are wide and accommodate different types of movement, making it accessible to most visitors.
The water body is not natural but formed by flooding an old sand pit after extraction ended. A constructed channel connects it to a nearby stream to manage water levels throughout the year.
