Öjendorf Cemetery is a large burial ground in the Billstedt district covering approximately 99 hectares with diverse burial sections. The cemetery includes lawn graves, family plots, and specialized areas designed for different faith communities.
Planning for this cemetery began in the 1930s when Hamburg authorities anticipated that the Ohlsdorf Cemetery would reach its limits. Significant land was acquired to establish this new large-scale burial facility for future generations.
The Italian memorial area here holds graves of victims from the National Socialist period, transferred to this location during the 1950s. This memorial space serves as a place of remembrance for those of Italian heritage.
The cemetery is well-maintained with ample parking and clear signage throughout the grounds to guide visitors. Orientation information is available at the entrances and near the main office building.
Since 1978, dedicated Islamic burial sections oriented toward Mecca have been established on the grounds. These areas include facilities for ritual washing ceremonies and show how the cemetery adapted to serve different faith communities.
