Italienische Kriegsgräberstätte Hamburg-Öjendorf, Military cemetery for Italian soldiers in Öjendorf, Hamburg, Germany.
The Italienische Kriegsgräberstätte Hamburg-Öjendorf is a cemetery for over 5,800 Italian soldiers in Hamburg. The graves are arranged in five trapezoidal sections around a tall limestone cross designed by sculptor G. Kraemer.
After the Cassibile Armistice of 1943, Italian soldiers who refused to fight for Germany were brought to Hamburg. They were held as military internees and forced to perform labor.
The gravestones display Italian inscriptions with names, military ranks, and civilian designations. Visitors encounter a quiet memorial that honors Italian soldiers who died far from home.
The cemetery is accessible on foot and offers quiet paths for walking. The best time to visit is during warmer months when the grounds are fully open.
Since 1999, families have been permitted to repatriate their deceased relatives to Italy for reburial. Roughly 20 such transfers have taken place so far.
