Christoph 47, Emergency medical helicopter in Greifswald, Germany
Christoph 47 is a rescue helicopter operated by DRF Luftrettung from the University Medical Center Greifswald, equipped with a pilot, emergency physician, and paramedic during daytime operations. The crew is trained to provide medical care from the air and transport patients quickly to specialized medical facilities.
The rescue helicopter service began operations in 1992, initially using a Bölkow Bo 105 model. In 2022, it transitioned to a modern Airbus Helicopters H145 D-3 with a five-blade rotor for improved performance.
The helicopter carries the radio call sign Christoph 47, following the German tradition of naming rescue helicopters after Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travelers.
The medical team responds to emergencies when ground ambulances cannot reach patients quickly enough or when air transport becomes necessary due to injury severity. The helicopter can also be deployed in poor weather or remote areas where ground vehicles cannot easily access.
Since 2020, the helicopter has conducted night missions, making the service available around the clock. These nighttime operations have significantly improved emergency response capability for serious medical events in the region.
