Generalzolldirektion, Bundesoberbehörde im Geschäftsbereich des Bundesministeriums der Finanzen
The Generalzolldirektion is the main federal agency for customs and tax matters in Germany, headquartered in Bonn. It oversees more than 48,000 customs officers nationwide who manage goods and passenger flows at borders and ports.
The Generalzolldirektion was created in 2016 by merging several agencies under one name to improve customs efficiency across Germany. Since its formation, it has adapted to new challenges and added departments focused on combating money laundering and illegal trade activities.
The office in Bonn is centrally located on Vaclav-Havel-Platz and is accessible by public transport and car with parking nearby. Visitors should expect security checks at the entrance since it is a government building.
In 2024 a new department called the Directorate of Digital was created to improve online enforcement and data analysis in fighting modern crime methods. This development shows how the agency is modernizing technologically to work more effectively with international partners.
